SugarSync Review

Company: SugarSync

Service: Online Cloud Backup

SugarSync is an online backup service provider that allows users not only to back up their files on secure, remote servers, but also to access those files from anywhere they can connect to the internet. What’s more, those users are able to access those file from a wide variety of devices as well. This is especially convenient when you consider that often people’s most important and/or expensive files are their largest ones, such as video files. If anything were to ever happen resulting in the loss of those (or other) files, not only could you lose some money, you could be losing some sentimentally valuable data as well.

Of course, it isn’t just personal users that can benefit from the services of a company like SugarSync. Business users can benefit from their services as well. In fact, the case could be made that business users benefit from online backup services even more than personal users do, at least in financial terms. If ever any of your in house servers were to fail in such a way as to result in the loss of reams and reams of your most valuable data, the financial hit your company could take would be quite devastating. Having your data backed up online in a secure manner would prevent that kind of loss.

Features of SugarSync

Just like any other online backup company, SugarSync offers a number of specific features. No two of these companies are exactly alike, so let’s take a close look at some of the most prominent features SugarSync has to offer, as well as how they can be of benefit to you. We’ll look at some of the drawbacks as well.

Before we look at some of the drawbacks, let’s look at some of the advantages:

A Free Plan

One of the biggest advantages of SugarSync is that they offer a free plan. Granted, the space you are allotted when you take advantage of their free plan is limited, but you get a total of five gigabytes. That’s more space than you get from the rare free plan offered by some of this company’s competitors. Even when you decide to upgrade to one of their paid plans, you still get a thirty day free trial. They offer home and business plans at various storage levels for various prices, all of which are quite reasonable and competitive.

Business Plans

The business plans which SugarSync has to offer boast slightly different features than their home plans. For example, they offer unlimited phone support with their business plans, as well as support at the introductory level for up to three users. You have the option to add additional users (and space) to your plan as the need arises. In addition to the control panels each of these users will have access to, you will also have an administration dashboard from which to manage your business’ various user accounts.

Ease and Simplicity

A lot of online backup companies talk about being easy to use, but SugarSync’s software and features are some of the easiest to use we have seen from this industry. Of course, that doesn’t mean there isn’t a wide range of features. There certainly is. It’s just that access to all of those features has been streamlined into a very intuitive interface. Plenty of documentation is provided for those who enjoy reading that sort of thing, but you certainly won’t have to. The built-in wizards are more than capable of guiding you step-by-step through the entire setup process.

Of course, all of this value, simplicity, and ease of use don’t amount to much if the service isn’t capable of doing what you need it to do. With SugarSync, you won’t have to worry. The backup speed is comparable to that on any similar company, even though it will obviously be affected by variables such as the speed of your internet connection and your other system resources. One nice feature here is that even if you’re initially backing up very large amounts of data, you’re still able to use your computer while the backup is being performed.

You have complete freedom to determine which folders are backed up automatically. Up to five older versions of each of your files can be stored, too. Plus, you will be able to access those files from any device, be it an iOS device, an Android, or even the Kindle Fire. You can share files over Twitter and Facebook, and the people you share them with won’t even need a SugarSync account in order to access them!

Security and Support

Whether they’re humans or robotic, hackers aren’t going to be able to steal your files when you’re using SugarSync. This is because of the encryption they use. For additional security, the company uses systems designed to protect your data in the event of a natural disaster at the server site as well. The customer support offered by SugarSync is second to none. Though home users are not given access to unlimited phone support (the way business users are), they are given access to unlimited support via live chat and email. There are also extensive FAQs and a knowledge base for you to peruse at your leisure.

You’ve read about the pros, now we should point out a con or two. Services that offer automatic backup usually also offer manual backup. That is not the case with SugarSync. Another thing you should be aware of is that open files are not backed up on SugarSync the way they are with some other online backup services.

From the name of the company, you can probably guess that their backup service allows you to sync your files across multiple devices. If that is something you need to be able to do, then they are a great alternative for you. However, even if you have only one device that you want to backup, you’d be hard pressed to find a company that offers a better value for your money than SugarSync.
